Restaurant recommendation
I'm looking for a nice place to surprise my wife for dinner for our upcoming anniversary. Would prefer NoVA rather than going into DC. Thinking along the lines of L'Auberge Chez Francois--we went soon after getting engaged, so that would work, but wondering if there are other similar places I don't know about. Guess I'm asking what are your "special occasion" places?
When I did a Google search for "fine dining" in northern VA, I got Applebees....no offense to those who enjoy it, but not what I had in mind...

I vote for L'Auberge Chez Francois!
I've been trying to get my husband to take me there for several years and have made no headway. A friend who as been there and also been to the Inn at Little Washington says that L'Auberge Chez Francois is the better 'bang for the buck' of the two.

Have you looked into Old Town Alexandria? I like Le Gaulois (sitting outside is really nice, but I don't know if they do it for dinner), Las Tapas, Geranium (or something like that). Chart House is also good, but pricey. Bastille, Farrah Olivia, Vermilion and Restaurant Eve are supposed to be very good, as well. I could probably think of more, if you give me a sec

Chez Francois (of course)
2941 (Falls Church)
Restaurant Eve (if you have the time, try the Tasting Room)
The Majestic (a little more lively)
Villa Mozart (supposed to be good, but I haven't tried it (in Fairfax))
(btw, Farrah Olivia is closed, but they're looking for a new location)

Restaurant Eve, either the bistro or the tasting room, would get my vote in a heartbeat. 2941, Inox, Vermillion, and Majestic are other decent options, depending on what you really want. L'Auberge has been resting on its laurels for years. Inn at Little Washington is way pricey, and honestly, in my opinion, not nearly as good as Eve (others will differ, but I think it is more show than anything else). Villa Mozart, Le Gaulois, Las Tapas, Geranio, and Bastille are really more neighborhood restaurants than special occasion places. Chart House is fine for what it is, but it is really just a very big, slightly upscale chain, with nothing special about it.For more information about any of these, I would strongly urge you to check out dcdining.com.

Are you willing to drive west? Ashby Inn in Paris (near Middleburg) is a great spot for a romantic dinner.
