I never knew NVA had a problem with gangs in the burbs.

How bad is it?

Well, the most serious gang threat is MS-13. They are helped by the presence of Salvordian immigrants (legal and illegal) here. They have committed some very notable crimes in the last 5 years but they are apparently on some sort of hibernation.

There are some Bloods and Crips offshoots here but they don't pose much of a threat or presence.

Other than that, the others are mostly wannabes who stay in Northern VA because they would get their handed to them if they operated in MD, Richmond, or Hampton Roads.

Ask the kids in the local schools, they will tell you what's happening.

WOW!! Gangs in NOVA! Say, it isn't so.

Gangs are everywhere. What we call gangs -- you call youths hanging out. Same people on TV saying, I never knew that would happen in this neighborhood.

I attended a very interesting seminar put on by the FCPD gang unit. They gave us a pamplet that helps to decipher a gang's "tags" (grafiti)...whenever I see tags, I'll study them to see if I can tell who they are and what they're trying to say. Many are warnings to other gangs...

While these ethnic gangs are certainly not harmless, they mainly prey on, and fight among each other. They are generally not a physical threat to society at large...they know that that would bring too much "heat" upon them.

Very true. Our gangs are mostly made up of wimpy wannabes. If they had to actually spend time in genuinely tough metro areas they'd get their butt kicked and be crying for mommy.

Gang activity is one of those things you hear about on the news every once in awhile, but not a big problem. It may be more prevalent in a few areas closer to DC. Out in my neck of the woods you see very little evidence of it. A few times a year you'll see some graffiti in the pedestrian tunnel under the main road, and last summer there was a fight at a community center. Things do happen from time to time, but it's not a daily or even regular event.

There was a homicide just reported by the Post over near Fort Belvoir/Mount Vernon; a group of teenagers jumped a 17-year-old and beat him to death. The initial reports did not specifically indicate whether it was gang-related, although the fact that a group was involved in the crime seems to suggest that was the case.

Sorry but I'll have to beg to differ. We have a very active Gang Task Force Unit in the NoVA area and they'll agree with me. There are more gang and gang issues then 99 % of the people here know. Has it reached the level the west coast is accustomed to? No. But there is definitely a gang problem here.
