Looking for Charitable Cause/Organization To Support In Fairfax (home, allergies)

This is for a company "giving back to the community" fundraising campaign. Looking specifically for direct causes to support that represent:

Tragic Afflictions
- An unfortunate but correctable illness or economic condition that gets little attention or receives no major support

Impossible Dreams
- Something positive and inspirational that demonstrates out of the box thinking, courage and determination.

Prefer to support directly but would accept working through an organization that operates efficiently.

OK, for real suggestions I like the ones already mentioned. We donate to the Loudoun Animal Shelter and the Fire Department of Loudoun. I think those are both really good causes. However, they aren't places that serve impossible dreams or tragic afflictions. And they're not in Fairfax. So, not quite what you're seeking.

I second DC Oldtimer's suggestion of NVTRP. I used to volunteer for them many years ago and they were great people doing hands-on work with very limited funds. About 3 years ago they had a barn fire (but kept providing lessons) and just found a permanent home about a year ago.

For "impossible dreams" I'd recommend VDOT - think relief of traffic congestion and speedy snow removal.
