Can anyone recommend the best option (as far as taxis or shuttles go) for getting from Midway airport to the Gary area? Any idea of how much taxi fare would be? Thanks in advance.

Good luck finding a taxi to take you to Gary. Aside from the fact that taxi drivers are reluctant to take people to bombed-out neighborhoods, that's a hell of a drive to some place where they have zero chance of picking up a return fare. That's not a favorable combination. You'd be better off hiring a limo to pick you up, and figure on $75-$80 -- which is just as well because that's not much more than a cab would charge if you found one to take you to Gary, reason being that if your final destination is outside the city limits or immediately adjacent suburbs, they are permitted to tack a 50% surcharge onto your fare. If you're staying at a hotel, call and ask if they have a shuttle. If you're staying with a friend or family member, have them pick you up.

The South Shore train has 3 stops in Gary, maybe they could take a cab to Hyde Park and catch a South Shore train there.

Contrary to popular belief, not all neighborhoods in Gary are "bombed" out, that's just someone who doesn't go into the city and yet decides to talk. Seeing as Gary is the only city that provides public transportation to other parts of the county, you could do a few things. Step one above into Hammond and then hop on the GPTC. You can find their routes here, Gary Public Transportation Corporation. Step two, depending on if you are lugging around a bunch of luggage is to take the Metra and then hit the South Shore in Chicago. Can't remember just exactly where they meet up, you can look up their information here, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. You would have to log on the the Metra web site to see their routes. You would get off at either the Downtown Gary location or the Miller Station and if you do not have a ride ready, you could then take GPTC to get you closest to your destination.

You're right -- only 80% of Gary is bombed out. And I've been to Gary plenty enough times, so I guess by your criteria that gives me license to talk.

Take a Metra train? From where to where?

He would need to take the orange line CTA to the city(loop) then get off at probably state and lake then to millenium to catch the south shore line
would be a heck of a lot easier to take the coach bus to highland

The quickest and most convenient way would just be to hire a limo/towncar to pick you up. The earlier poster is correct though, that'd be about $75. If you don't want to spend that much money and if time is not a factor, I'd recommend taking the orange line from Midway to Roosevelt, then picking up the South Shore at the Museum Campus stop. Take that to one of the three Gary stops. Give yourself a few hours, but this is a pretty easy way and uses all public trans.

The Op should just stand out in front of the Midway terminal, click her heels together 3 times and say "Theres No Place Like Gary. Theres No Place Like Gary!" And voila! She'll wake up in a place that certainly looks like a Kansas tornado hit it!
