I've really enjoyed reading the forums here, very helpful. I finally figured out how to start my own I am searching online for housing until we can actually visit and realize there are not a lot of websites showing housing options. Specifically, we're looking for good school systems, low crime, some diversity, etc and these forums helped narrow it down to a few towns (Schererville, Valpo, Crownpoint, Munster, St John, Dyer) but is it easier to find a rental (home, townhome, 2 story condo, etc) driving through the town because Craigslist, rent.com and other websites have FEW options.

Any direction will be helpful

Driving through that many towns would be very time consuming and unless you narrowed it down more, it would be inefficient.

Have you looked at the classifieds for the local papers?

The Post Tribune: Post-Tribune: News from Merrillville, Hammond, Gary and Northwest Indiana

The Times: The Times of Northwest Indiana It's a bit trickier to find the classifieds here. Go to the section called "Get It"

You might also think about putting your own ad in one of the papers. There is so much scamming that goes on with craigslist I would hesitate to put an ad there for this situation.

It's more difficult because you want to rent something that is not an apartment complex type of thing.
