Our family will be moving to the Valparaiso, IN area next summer and we are hoping to find a great neighborhood for our son whom will be 13 and starting 8th grade at the time. The neighborhood we currently live in is an older family crowd with no kids close and specifically no kids around his age... he has been bored to tears and I need to find a neighborhood where he can easily make friends, be active and play outside with other kids. We also have 2 girls which will be 5 and 2 next summer and would love a neighborhood with kids for them as well but our main concern is our middle school aged son.

We are looking for a home in the $350k - $450k range but hoping to stay around $410k max if possible. Thanks for any and all information you may have!

Your son will make friends at school. Living near other children his age is not a guarantee they will be friends. Chances are they won't.

I know this post is somewhat old but I wanted to chime in. It's hard to suggest a certain area of Valpo that would work best for you but you will NOT have any issues finding a house in that range. All the schools are pretty good out here. However, I think you may need to narrow it down to make your oldest son happy. Are you the type of mom that will let him walk around town or are you more sheltered? The downtown area is AWESOME for kids to walk down and there are tons of events at Central Park Plaza that they probably would enjoy but it all depends on how you are as a parent. There's a ton of parks throughout the town with ValPlayso being the most recent and, I think, the best but that's more towards the north side.

I live in the north side and I'm starting to enjoy it but there isn't much that is walkable like when I lived downtown. If you REALLY trust your son then there is a city bus that will take him pretty much anywhere in town (it's the V-Line), this would be good for trips to the movies with friends or something.

I would always recommond the downtown area because it is so convienent to everything. I'm talking like Chicago St or Jefferson St.
