I have been offered a job near Pearl City making 53K a year. I am trying to get a picture for what my living expenses would be. I am not looking for a luxurious lifestyle by any means, but would like to know if this is a livable wage for the area (hoping my husband, an RN, can find at least part time work). How much are utilities and rent? Any ideas for affordable housing in Pearl City and surrounding areas?

Thank you!

You will find many posts regarding COL if you search this forum. I would think 53K plus is doable. Check out craigslist for an easy answer to rents. I would budget 1800-2400 per month, but thats me! Food for 2, around 600-800, gas, depends on your car & driving habits. Good luck.

If you give us an idea where you are moving from we might be able to help when comparing, also how far your money will go.

53K a year is very doable. And as he is an RN there are many positions available here for him in that type of work. I believe the pay here though as an RN will not be what he is used to but your income plus his own will get you 2 pretty far here in hawaii. As for Pearl City there are many apartments in the general facilities. As Jolie stated things really depend on you 2. If you are not looking for "luxurious" you could find someting at about $1200 a month no utilities electric anywhere between 150 - 250 is a good "guess", water runs you about $60 every two months. Cable plus internet and phone for myself is $180 a month (all the premium channels and dvr included thru Oceanic) ummm...cell wise MOBI has some good plans at $90/month unlimited everything for 2. Food really depends on what you eat. Pearl City has many cheap restaurants not to mention Pearlridge Mall that has 2 food courts. Hope that helps!

I will be moving from Idaho (it is very cheap to live here compared to other western cities in the U.S.).

I guess I'll through this out there too: Is there any mountain biking on Oahu? Trying to decide if we need to sell or bring our bikes.

Thanks.

Bicycles are good on Oahu but more folks use them as transportation than recreation, I think. There are a few trails up in the mountains though, so you can off road with them, too. You could check Craig's List and see if it is worth shipping your bikes or buying different ones when you get to Oahu.

I guess folks learn pretty early that a lot of what happens on the islands is determined by shipping.

I would say that making $53K and living on Oahu would be comparable to making $28K in Idaho and the lifestyle associated with that income. You'll have to decide if that works for you.

No, he is saying that making $53K in Oahu with the higher living expenses would be comparable to making $28K in Idaho
