I just accepted a position in Honolulu and they want me there to start work by the end of February. So I basically have just a few weeks to figure all this out. I am moving from the East Coast. I plan to stay there for about a year to 18 months. My new company will reimburse me for all relocation costs, including shipment of a vehicle.
I am torn about even whether to take any furniture with me and rent a furnished place, but then I have some nice things that I would want to use, like my bed. I also am not sure if I want to rent a room or get my own apartment to rent. I am able to afford my own apartment, I do not require roommates....just roommates would make it cheaper of course
Here are things that I own that I am not sure...should I take these all with me??? Should I worry if a TV will be damaged during shipment?
-- Queen size bed with headboard
-- Dresser with dimensions 58" W X 20" D X 48" H
(It is larger than a regular dresser because it is wider)
-- Nightstand
-- 42" flat screen LCD TV (as well as my Wii)
-- TV Stand
-- Chair with ottoman
Does this sound okay to move to Hawaii with. anything to leave behind?

Since it isn't a permanent move for you, renting a furnished apartment might make more sense. The headboad, nightstand, TV stand and chair with ottoman are easy enough to come by that you'd be able to find something to make do with for the amount of time you'd be here. The Wii is small enough you'd be able to carry it over with you. It's always nice to have one's own bed, but shipping a bed from one side of the planet to the other doesn't make a lot of sense, especially since it will just be for a year or so and then you'd have to either leave it or ship it back again.
Ha, you sound like me! I had my company move me over. The only furniture I brought was my bed. Unless you're attached to the other things, I'd say sell them beforehand. I would prob keep the TV as well. I just had a box type tv when I lived there, but had I had an LCD, I would've kept that
leave it all behind. rent a furnished place. you can buy a new mattress for less then it would cost to ship yours, then sell it on craig's list when you go home.
I'd bring a box of spices and any small electrical/electronic item you may need such as extension cords, timers/dimmers.
Large furniture could be a problem just getting into some buildings. If you don't use what you bring check the local storage rates. They're 2-3+ times higher than mainland prices.
Furnished rentals are plentiful and people are always selling/giving away stuff when they are leaving, check Craigslist.

But the company is paying for everything. I don't have to pay for the shipping.

What happens if your term of employment ends on a sour note? Either you hate you job and quit or get let go for any reason. Then would you have to pay to ship everything back to the mainland?

And, if you are planning on taking the stuff back to the mainland after a year, consider if Hawaii will have beat the life out of it. Furniture and possessions will be affected by the sunlight, humidity, salt air, and perhaps termites and other bugs.
I'd not bring anything if it was just for a year, other than personal things like my clothes, laptop, guitar, etc.
