We lived in Colo off & on for about 15 yrs and one of the absolute best things about that great state was the lottery. The proceeds are split between education and parks & rec. Hawaii needs to tap into that goldmine. Colorado has some of the most awesome urban walking /biking trails, as well as well marked and maintained hiking trails. Every municipal park gets funding. Every public swimming pool.
Oahu beaches are a disgrace. So much for respecting the "aina". I volunteer with various groups to clean the beaches. Even the beaches that are not open to the public are filled with cigarette butts and trash. Its locals and tourists. I was at Pupukea and had to tell a grown up not to use her shampoo & conditioner in the outside showers, as it flows directly into the ocean. You'd of thought I was suggesting cannibalism to her, such was the outrage she turned on me.

I hear from a mate with native ties that part of this is local attitude against people visiting the island and raising the prices of everything leaving them in poverty. An attitude I can actually understand as it happened here in Oregon decades ago and still permeates the state in many ways.

But on the other hand, Hawaii in general has one major tourist attraction that costs absolutely nothing. Everyone should be taking advantage of that freely available commodity as much as possible and taking ever dime they can from tourists!

Mayoral Debate tonight:

Mayor Carlisle - "when is the last time you used a public restroom and was it a postive experience"

He netted it to homelessness. Gov Cayetano: As a hands on mayor - why aren't you doing anything about it? Candidate Caldwell - people are destroying bathrooms - why are people doing this, particularly in Waikiki.

They all agreed it was an issue but had no real answers.

Yeah, um, no. Tourism isn't what drives up the cost of living in Hawaii. Having to ship most everything over costs. And being the psychological dream escape place to live drives up housing.

Cool. Hopefully something will be done to work on the problem. Good catch for noticing this and posting.

The john at Makapu'u seldom has paper, but when it does...BEST place to drop a schmed. Slight breeze, the sound of the waves crashing, and a great view of the cliffside.

I read an article a few years ago about some Hawaii facilities that had been completely rebuilt- expensive new fixtures, walls, floors, lighting..everything. The contractors were done, they left and (iirc) practically overnight all the new work was stripped bare by thieves, the rest totally destroyed by vandals.

They're like insects, it's so appalling! Some of those bathrooms are so terrifying they can never be cleaned, they need to be nuked.
