I am not broke at the end of the month, but I am not a big spender either. I find much happiness living here. Just in all the little things. The weather, the scenery, the ocean views, the island atmosphere, the green mountains, the blue sky with fluffy white clouds and sunshine on my skin, the smell of saltwater and clean fresh air... I think moving back here was definitely one of the best decisions I have made. I may not stay here forever, but it is good for right now.
I have thoughts of moving to Oahu soon. All the things that IslandDreamin described are the reasons I want to go to Oahu. I understand that living costs are one of the highest in the entire country, gas is $4, parking is expensive, there is racism against "haoles" aka white people, and once in awhile people can get "rock fever" but hawaii is calling to me.... I cant stand it I just need to be there asap.
Gas is the least of it. A couple bucks per month doesnt mean squat. Its the accumulation of higher rent, utilities, food and lower income, then gas prices that corrode peoples income.
Gasoline is a lot more than $4 a gallon... I just read they hit a new record over $5.50 a gallon. You should probably do a little more research.
I remember last year when there were a few places (isolated---certainly not in Honolulu) in Hawaii that hit almost $6/gallon for premium or diesel but that hasn't been the norm.
I don't pay anywhere near $5.50/gallon for regular here on Oahu but you can get close to that on the Big Island if you need premium or diesel. I would assume you can get it for less even on the BI if you shop around.
As for research, how about some very current prices for gasoline:
The consumption and price of gas aside (which I don't think is terribly bad considering you are driving on a rather small island), finding street parking in some of Honolulu's neighborhoods can be a complete PITA.
Ahhh, ain't America great! A thread on emotional well being hinges on the price of gas and the availability of parking.
And that's from someone who got a ticket and almost towed from the tow-away lane behind the Academy of Art (yup, this neighbor islander wanted to get some culture and didn't realize it was a tow-away lane).
