Hi

I'm going to be going to Oahu for rotations for school, and I'll be mostly stationed at Tripler Army Center, but there are a few locations that I'll be working at near Waikiki. I'll be living there for about 9 months.

I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions about where I should live. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in a safe location.

Also I was wondering about the commute. If I live in Waikiki and drive up to Tripler in the morning, how long wil it take? Does rush hour go both ways? Is there any sort of public transportation that I could consider, or should I just get a car?

Thanks in advance!

We were visiting Oahu last week and it didn't seem like there were any more slow times in the traffic patterns, There was ALWAYS traffic on the road, going both ways, too. Although if you live in town and work out at Tripler, it would be better than living out at Tripler and working in town, but there will still be traffic. I'd opt for an apartment as close to work as possible.

I was thinking about living near Chinatown, but I heard that there were a lot of homeless people there (or at least in some parks near there). I was wondering if this was true and if it was, which parks I should be avoiding? Is Aala park ok?

Aala is the park to avoid. That is where all the homeless tend to hang out. Although the city is trying to clean it up.
You could look into trying to find a place near Trippler. Salt Lake is pretty close. You are also half way to Waikiki when you have to go there. Here is the bus schedule for Oahu believe #31 bus goes to Trippler Best of luck.
