I'm a 43 year old single guy in Seattle and I want to start living in Oahu for 3-4 months a year from Jan-May to get away from the gray skies and chill of Seattle. Where would you suggest the best place for me to live on Oahu? I have a Internet job so I can work for home, so would not need to commute anywhere. I would be looking a renting a furnished rental, subletting or airbnb. I like to hike, swim, would join some meetups to try and meet new friends, etc... Any suggestions for a good areas of Oahu for me to look for a place to live?
Is Waikiki too touristy though? I just don't want to be in the middle of a tourist trap. I have not been to Oahu in 21 years, and was only there for a day or so when I was there so I may be wrong about Waikiki. I lived in Maui for one year back in 1992. I'm just thinking Oahu would have more going on. Kauai and Big Island probably too boring for 3-4 mos. I've looked at Florida, Mexico, Costa Rica, Caribbean, Panama, Thailand and just think Hawaii may be the best fit overall for me. I'm going to visit Hawaii for the first time this month since I left back in 1993.

Are you willing to commute a short distance either by bus,car or is that not what you want? Do you want to be close to the hustle and flow of the city or do you want more subdued country? Did you like Maui?
I did like Maui, but I was 22 years old when I lived there, had a group of friends my age where we all worked at the same hotel and hung out together. Now I'm 43 & will be working solo from my home. I won't have to commute to work as I can work from home, but I think you may mean commute to stuff to do? I'm not sure on the country vs. hustle and bustle, probably will check out both. Being single I would probably tend to go with being closer to more stuff to do. But if you have some suggestions for both in town and outside that would be great. When I look on Craigslist and other places for furnished short terms rentals, it will help to narrow it down to places I might like to live vs. everywhere.

Well if you want big city life close to the beach then I suggest Honolulu. If thats too big then pearl city or waipahu with a short commute by car to the beach.
Country the north shore but not between November through March, which is the busiest times and crowded with surfers.
I would be there Jan to May. OK so sounds like Pearl City or Waipahu are good places to look around to see what's out there for rentals. I appreciate your help hawaiian by heart

You may like miliani too. You know wha,t you may also want to look at a map of oahu. Advise is just that advice.
Yuck. No no no. Hawaii Kai, Kailua, Waikiki, Ala Moana, Kahala.
Why not kapahulu? Waikiki, Ala Moana are districts not cities. What viper is suggesting is upperclass areas, and thats fine if you can afford it.
