Hello all. I've been lurking here for a few weeks while I waited to see if my company was going send me to Hawaii and I recently found out it is a go. I requested to go because I want to experience the great things Hawaii has to offer and possibly stay long term if everything works out.
I've been looking on Craigslist to find a place (Waikiki or surrounding areas) and am trying to decide if I should get a studio or find a roommate. On one hand it's nice to have privacy but on the other it seems having a roommate would help save money and could also be a way to make friends. Did any of you find a roommate on Craigslist for your first living arrangement in Hawaii? If so, would you recommend it? If not, why?
I'm wondering though, it seems there is resistance from others towards rooming with people fresh off the mainland. Is this because they don't want to have to teach the new guy everything? Are they worried they will leave in a year and don't want to risk getting attached? Do they not want the smell of "new guy" on them?? Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks.
Obe, that was a really quick decision based on one person's brief input. I think perhaps maybe you really wanted to get a studio rather than a roommate?
You might think about the fact that perhaps a roommate may help you assimilate quicker to island life. Someone already living here would have the advantage of having checked out things and would save you the time to learn it all on your own.

I'm not really going to base my decision of that persons comment. I guess I was being sarcastic with a short reply to their short response.
I think a roommate would be ideal but it may be difficult finding the right one in just a month. I will keep trying though, we'll just have to see what the Craigslist gods present me in the next month. Thanks for your input.
Personally. If i was single i would go with a studio. I like having my own space. Also the dating seen should be a consideration, regarding to have a roommate?
Are you planning on dating? That should weigh into your decision regarding a roommate.

Yeah I've taken that into consideration. Dating would be nice but not highest priority right now. I was mainly drooling over how much money I could save by having a roommate.. would afford me more funds to go enjoy Hawaii on the weekends more.
Do any of you know anything about the monarch Hawaiian condo/hotel bldg in waikiki? There are several units in there for a good price but the reviews I've found online are kinda bad. I'm not worried about the judgements on the quality of furnishings, but more about the other tenants. Lots of reviews said the tenants were "sketchy" or "dodgy." Now granted that could have been written by some prissy tourist that has never seen a tattoo or a chinstrap beard, but I was wondering if any of you had any experience or knowledge of the community there..
I've stayed in the hotel once and the condos multiple times but it's probably been more than 15 years. Most condos are hotel room s with dorm fridge and hot plate. Some bigger ones have real kitchen. Some nice views. Condos individually owned so quality depends on landlord. Probably would not recommend if it was first fantasy trip to Hawaii but doable if you're OK with MOTEL 6.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I really wanted it to work out for the price they're asking. The unit itself looks fine but if the community of the building isn't so great I'm not going to stay there for a year. Thanks for the feedback.
