Lets start by saying that I’ve worked all my life and spent 6 years in the Navy. I just recently became disabled while working in IT.

My question is about the availability of Section 8 or Low Income Housing.
I will be moving from a higher cost and lower availability area then Oahu. Here people spend $800 to share a bedroom.
What’s the market like for low income housing? I receive Section 8 assistance. I’m 60 yo and don’t need much. No attitude, kind, and respectful.
Any advice on areas to look. I just need access to Bus and groceries .
Thanks for any input

What's your budget? Is a small studio or tiny one bedroom adequate?

Hi,
My budget is $1700 a month from SSDI. A one bedroom would be nice but not a deal breaker

Does $1,700 include utilities?

I looked up what section 8 will pay for a 1 bedroom, $1374 including utility's. Out of my $1700 income, I'll contribute around $400 to that and have $1300 a month remaining

Most landlords do not accept Section 8 on Oahu because of the tight rental market.

There are over 10,000 on the waitlist for Section 8 on Oahu - and no new applicants are being accepted.

The waitlist was closed about 10 years - briefly opened last year - but closed again with days.

According to the Hawaii Public Housing FAQ Website on Section 8, if you currently have a Housing Voucher in another state, it may be "portable" to Hawaii. You need to check to make sure.

Having a housing voucher does not mean that a rental will be available. The country is full of people who have Section 8 vouchers and can't find any landlord who will accept the voucher.
