Well that's about the only way they'll get any meaningful ridership.
I curious as to why you would say that?
Since I drive a lot here in Oregon and since TheBus is so good on Oahu, we usually don't rent a car there. We take TheBus so that I can get a vacation from driving. We always notice that most of the buses are standing room only in the mornings and evenings with people going to and from work. If so many are willing to take TheBus there, why wouldn't they take the train when it is available?
I don't work in downtown Portland but if I did, I would take the MAX train in and do use it whenever we go down there for a sporting event, concerts etc.

honobob said meaningful ridership. As in ridership worth the $80,000 PER FOOT cost for the system and that's just to build it.
Well - they can't exactly close the highway during the day for rail.
True. During the day at points along Kam Hwy. It is only one line at times both ways. At least Kiewit, is staggering the lane closures at different locations down Kam Hwy, Pearl City and Aiea, heading for Pearl Harbor, or heading West. And yes Kiewit has started working Kam Hwy near Makalapa Gate and Halawe gate. Pearl Harbor In both directions.
Turns out the noise was to fix a busted mainline, and it did not repeat last night. Fixing a main is pretty important so I understand...
That definitely qualifies as an "emergency repair of a public utility." Some folks tend to forget that all current construction activities on Oʻahu might not be directly related to the rail project.
Yup jung just think its only 20 miles of track and right now the costs are close to 6 billion right now(not completed). Thats 1,000 million in a billion. Thats close to 300 million a mile for a single rail lightrail system! Pupule!
I don't know where pj737 got his number but its really not the wild if you think about how the costs seem to keep rising
It is hard to find real facts. I just looked around at various news articles, and it appears that the total cost is $5.2 billion, which comes out to a little over $47,000 per foot. But is that before the recent additional costs that have been added on?
$8,500,000,000/20 miles/5,280 feet = $80,492 FOR EVERY SINGLE LINEAR FOOT OF RAIL
To put this into perpective, Seattle's rail system is by far the most expensive system in the nation (per mile). Their cost? $33,000 per foot.
And if you deny that rail will cost AT LEAST $8.5B, it's time to put down Caldwell's koolaid.. The costs will far surpass $8.5B once this disaster is "done".
