We bought a place on Makaha Beach in 2011 because we absolutely loved the area, as our retirement spot as of 2022, vacationing there twice a year until then, renting it out to other vacationers the rest of the year to pay the mortgage. Lots of people told us we would not be welcome as white mainlanders, but all the locals have been incredibly kind and welcoming to us. We respect the culture there as we would in a foreign country, including taking a deep breath when we are impatient with island time. The magic of the place and people VASTLY outweighs any minor culture shock and we cry every time we have to leave. Fortunately my husband got a transfer and this fall we are moving there 5 years BEFORE retirement, because we couldn't stand to keep waiting! Cliche or not, it really is paradise, and the west side is the best part of it.

Good to hear,
thanks for the positive post...the key word in your post was RESPECT.

It goes a long way.

I will do that. Looks like the move is December 18. On island the last half of September to get set up with driver's license, storage unit, etc.

We too had the same experience and absolutely love this little corner of Oahu.
Our retirement move is around June 2018.
Welcome to Makaha, welcome neighbor!

Glad you didn't listen to what others said on that front. I've always said that its best to sometimes take what others say with a grain of salt until you've had time to investigate yourself.
