My husband was stationed on Oahu and we will be moving there at the beginning of January. We are wanting to live on base, but will have to live off base for a few months while we wait.. He doesn't really want to live in Honolulu because of the drive, and I just want to live somewhere safe. Any suggestions? Where are good areas to live, and not so good areas to live? Thanks!!!

At which base will he be stationed? Do you have school age kid(s) who will be attending a private or public school?

If he is stationed in central Oahu, consider Mililani. Most home owners want a full year lease commitment but you may be able to get assistance in finding temporary month-to-month housing there.

Although keep in mind, practically anything month to month in Central Oahu will be an illegal rental.

What branch? Have you verified that the wait is several months? We are a Navy family, and arrived here this summer at the peak of PCS season. We were offered base housing right away. As Hawaii is OCONUS, you get up to 60 days in temp base housing covered (i.e. Navy Lodge, Inn at Schoefield).

I just posted the article, other things i leave for people to see and decide for themselves...
BTW if you thought this article is overreacting little bit, i am not from law enforcement so i don't know how really bad or good this situation really is, all i can say as somebody who grew up in communist Eastern Europe where you could go in any part of the town and in any part of the day Hawaii are only place and state in USA the most closely resembles home when it comes to safety...
