Is there a way to leave the Makaha area to get to the North Shore that doesn't involves the highways or "the road to hana?"

The road to Hana is on Maui and Makaha and North Shore are on Oahu so I don't think taking the "road to Hana" will help you much.

There used to be a few cane haul roads that went from the Waikele area to roughly the Haleiwa area but that doesn't cut much of the travel off between those two points. There's a mountain range between Makaha and North Shore without any roads you can drive on between them. You can't get around Kaiena point by car, either. So, I guess the basic answer is "no, not really".

Yep those are completely two different islands unless you meant something else.

Hotzcatz pretty much said it; no there really isn't a way to bypass the highways. You can take the Mililani way through Schofield Barracks OR take the country route which is go through Kunia, pass the Dole plantation and pass through Haleiwa.

Hope this helps.

When I said "road to hana" I meant rough road, sorry, should have been clearer on that.

Thanks for the help, thought a local would know.

Been to the island many times, and took the western roads as far as we could go, it felt like the North shore was only a hundred yards away, but couldn't figure out how to get there. Pretty barren at the end of the road there.
