Yes yet another moving to Oahu thread. I am in the final stages of an interview for a job that I can't really pass up. The job is in Law Enforcement in the Honolulu area. I am having a hard time finding information on area towns to move to and areas to avoid. Seems like most of threads turn into are you sure you want to do this and it is very expensive, which we know. Some considerations are that I am married with a young child so we would like to be in a safe area. We are looking to rent because this will only be short term and then have to transfer (2 years). I am trying to get some areas to look into for house rentals or apartments then come out an visit. So I guess basically what I am trying to ask is what areas of Oahu would you live in and what areas would you avoid and why.
Thanks

If you get to pick, go for Blackpoint, Kohala or Mariner's Ridge. Ha! Not likely on a Law Enforcement salary. Which part of Oahu will you be working on? The traffic is absolutely horrendous so you want to live as close to work as possible. Since you mentioned "the Honolulu area" I'm guessing that's downtown somewhere. Close to there which is nice might be Manoa, Nuuanu, some of the apartments in Kakaako are nice, there are loads of apartment buildings near downtown. Stay away from the ones on the Ewa side of Chinatown, that wouldn't be a good neighborhood for mainland newbies. Kaimuki might be nice if you are looking for a house to rent. Upper Makiki, Roundtop and Tantalus are nice but probably out of your price range.
