Names of Ohio Blast Furnaces (Cleveland, Youngstown: closing, shop, stats)

I was wondering if anyone knows the name of any of the blast furnaces that make iron for the steel mills in Ohio? Because I was listening to Bruce Springsteen sing about the Jenny furnace in Youngstown. But what about the old Republic/WCI furnace in Warren, the ones at the tube mill in Lorain, the big one owned by Mittall in Cleveland, W-P/Severstal's furnaces in Mingo-Junction and Steubenville, and Armco/A-K in Middletown. Also ones that are gone now are Cyclops Steel in Portsmouth, Republic Steel in Canton, and Youngstown Sheet and Tube in Campbell, and US Steel Ohio Works.

Usually they were named after a woman, like the Carrie or Eliza furnaces in Pittsburgh.

I was told that "Jenny" was really Jeanette, and would never have been referred to as Jenny, at the time. (artistic license)

The only name I can remember is Dorothy Six in Duquesne, Pa.

New Boston Detroit Steel Mill-Cyclops Steel the blast furnace was called "Louise" there is a photo of the demo. March16,1986 Portsmouth Public Library site.Heres some little stats on her;it began producing pig iron in August of 1953;she soared as high as a 10 story building;5 times a day pig iron was tapped[250 tons at a time]. Info from Norfolk and Western Magazine February 1955. In the picture on the cover the plant was on 225 acres with its own coking plant.There was also a smaller furnace in the shot but don't know its name believe it was built in 1916? I have a book HISTORY OF THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY IN SCIOTO COUNTY,OHIO by Frank H.Rowe 1938. My fathers side of family helped start the first rolling mill in Ohio here in Portsmouth in the 1830's he is in the book. Hopes this helps you out and good luck.

I found out the name of the smaller blast furnace from 1917 it was "Ole Susie".

In Cleveland, Ohio there was one named "Susan", since tore down, located at old J&L mill. In Ashland, Ky two are standing. One used most recently is named "Amanda" and the one not being used is "Bellfonte". Most go by location with number added, like Gary 13 at USS Steel Gary, In. Cleveland now has two that go by C-5 and C-6. I had priveledge to work on all these. At one time there were over 100 furnaces in the US.

The Bellfonte at AK steel Ashland has been demolished noticed it was gone when we went shopping at the Ashland Mall. They also are closing the coking plant east of the mill if they can't sell it the wrecking ball heard EPA regulations are the reasons for the closing.Sun Coke has a newer plant in Scioto Co that is more technologically advanced and are wanting to expand but again the EPA is in the way of progress
