These are from OKC. Not a tornado, but looked kind of scary.

Driving east from "the city" we tried to outrun a storm front once. Got past Shawnee and managed to stay just ahead of the leading edge of the thunderstorm. It was a beautiful sight to see that huge black cloud just towering over us, with 60 mph gusts which were kicking up dust, etc. Then out of the blue the wind dies and a super gust came from the exact opposite direction.

We looked at each other and said OMG!!!!!

i've been in okc since 1974 and have never seen a tornado. tv coverage is pretty wall-to-wall when weather is bad. getting out of the way is usaully accomplished easily enough, we just load up the kids and dogs and find a good viewing spot. personally, i'd love it if a tornado took my house down to the fdoundation. my biggest worrywith tornadoes would be a daytime tornado with nobody at home, then the dogs would be on their own..

I've been reading a lot of posts on the forum lately because I'm moving to Edmond in July from Oregon. All you Okies seem to have such great senses of humor and make me giggle a lot. I'm looking forward to it...as for tornadoes, I'm definitely bringing my running shoes.

Not to worry - as deb said find the most interior room, grab a mattress, and protect yourselves. Our weather system here is so advanced (The National Weather Service is located in Norman, OK) that they will warn you way ahead of time. The warning goes across your TV screen even if you aren't watching the news. They give you at least 15 minutes to get situated before the storm comes and more time if they are moving rather slowly. It's always a good idea to keep batteries and flashlights handy; but I've lived in OK for all 24 years of my life and I've never actually seen a tornado if that tells you anything! *KNOCK ON WOOD*

You have to take it seriously and be prepared, but you've got to have a sense of humor about, or you will worry yourself to death.

Oklahoma people like their fried foods....for a reason........the heavier you are the less you tend to get tossed around when tornadoes hit you...........

This has always been my motto. I'm completely justified in eating that whole basket of okra for the very likely scenario you have pointed out above.

Maybe I should wear a parachute for when the tornado spits me out at 1000'.

Seriously, I have been mainly looking at undeveloped land in rural areas so that I could build a storm cellar and a house that would hold up better in a tornado. The Storm cellar is more for a secure storage than for tornadoes. I would be more worried about having my gun collection stolen while I was in town than I am about tornadoes.
