So i'm 31 years old, married with no kids. My wife is about to start her 2 year program for radiology which is a full time commitment. I'm a superintendent in the construction industry and we have both lived in San Diego our entire lives. My mother in law and her husband live in OK in fact they just bought a place out in SEMINOLE. He works for a construction company out there and has offered me a position. My goal is to be able to provide my wife the opportunity to focus exclusively on her school and to actually be able to afford to live. I make about 61K a year here and I would be making somewhere in the area of 50K out there. We are both pretty country in the sense that we live in 1 of a few areas in San Diego that is all horse property and somewhat secluded (obviously this is southern CA so I use the term somewhat) Her mom absolutely loves it out there and I really believe it could be a great opportunity for us.

Any comments or replies would be extremely helpful as this is a really hard decision for us. Tornados are a concern but reading other posts has eased my fears somewhat. Any ideas of a good place to live that within 30-50 miles of OKC.

What are your thoughts on two young people from SD leaving everything they know and moving to OK?

Oh I almost forgot to mention that we have talked about leaving CA for years for many different reasons. The rat race, the smog, cost of living, not very many genuine people, the list goes on... Thank you to anyone who takes time to help us on this life changing decision.

If you're not too spoiled by the year round perfect weather of San Diego, go for it. Opportunity is knocking loudly. There's much construction going on in Oklahoma in the towns that are growing.

If you want easy access to Seminole and OKC, Shawnee is probably your best bet. It's about 20 miles east of the metro area and about 10 miles northwest of Seminole.

This is an excellent suggestion IMO.

Yeah, if you make 50,000 a year living in Oklahoma, you guys can live a good life. Plenty of schools for your wife around OKC as well.

It would only take an income of about $42K per year in OKC to equal $61K in San Diego. Plenty of secluded areas with land for horses within the distance you've set, not just Shawnee. Could be Tecumseh, Newalla, a rural area, or others. Any of which would allow you to escape the rat race, smog, high cost of living, and less than genuine people.

Thank you for your replies. We have been looking in several different areas. I can't get over the difference in the cost of rent! If we wanted to be closer to OKC are there any areas that we should avoid? Mainly in regards to crime and safety...

The only areas of OKC that are completely off limits are the areas just to the south and NE of downtown. But if you are looking for acreage I doubt you would be interested in these areas.

Shawnee is a good suggestion. JMO, there are plenty of horse properties in Choctaw, Harrah, Newalla, and Eastern Oklahoma County as well. The only knock against Shawnee is it is a pretty good clip to OKC, nearly 40 miles just to downtown.

Just to alleviate you concerns, OKC has a significant population of Californians. They call this movement "the wrath of grapes." At last check, the migration to Oklahoma is the most lopsided movement out of the state. Just look how many yellow jerseys are in the crowd during a Thunder-Lakers game. Here is an article from a few years ago:

If you chose to live downtown OKC and head East for your work commute there's very little traffic you'd encounter.

I have a new co-worker who I helped get a job here. He's moving from Dallas for similar reasons. His wife is doing a residency at one of the hospitals. If you're both pretty country, you'll like it here, certainly much more than I do. I'm from a big city too. I do think my transition would have been easier if I was married. For you, shouldn't be a problem, and you'll be amazed how far $50k goes here compared to SD.
