[quote=TulsaArtist;8584413]Unfortunately there arent any real antique stores that I have found. What people call antiques here is either reproduction stuff or "old" junk. Its really criminal actually. They often sell crap for what you can get the real thing, in good quality, for in Europe. I have been to the Haskel antique auction a few times and occasionally they get something decent in. Even there the stuff is leftovers of leftovers. Not investment quality antiques at all. But the people here dont know the difference and buy it anyway.

It kind of depends on your definition of what an antique is. I have some antiques, but they aren't 'antiques' to me, they are from my own family. I do get a great deal of amusement from some of the 'antiques' on ebay, for instance, especially music instruments. Seems like anything made before the '70s or so is considered an antique! But that's not the kind I have, what I have are small things - a ring my grandfather bought my grandmother with the profit he made working on the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a very nice one, but it has much more value to me as a keepsake than it's monetary value. Same with one of the flat irons my grandmother used to iron clothing a century ago. I suppose it might be worth something to a collector of that kind of memorabilia, but it's worth a lot more to me.

I have others, but I got them because I liked them, not as an investment. I've learned the hard way that those invenstments can go up in smoke just as fast as something shiny and new if one's house burns.

North May Avenue has an "antique row" with several shops right together. You could spend a couple of days going through all the shops. I know I did.
