My brother and I were discussing this recently. Do Oklahomans have Southern accents, or is it more of a Texas type "drawl"? Just curious.

I would have to say a cross between Texas and Arkansas.

That is until you get out pretty far West where just about like everything else about the state, things change. I would say the farther west you travel you will notice less of an accent.

I don't think it's strong enough to be considered a Southern drawl. Either way I like it, it's cute

It doesn't sound southern, Texan, or even Arkie to me. It is just different. And it depends upon who is talking, because people come here from all States.

It is hard to define. It's definitely not a Southern drawl and as Guthrie Kid says the farther West you go it kind of disappears. Also, it depends on what part of Oklahoma. In the South it definitely has a Texas sound, in the East there's a whole different blend. Just like Oklahoma's a transition state when it comes to weather and geography, it's also that way with accents (IMO).

Oh, there is a definite accent amongst western Oklahoma Indians. As a kid, we used to really notice how our cousins talked. I have noticed as our cousins got older, they would tend to lose some of their accent on purpose.

The older generation would use a lot of Indian words mixed in with a lot of sign language. Their accent was based on speaking two languages.

I don't think I can categorize it. I have a friend from North Carolina and his accent is a different breed altogether. We call him "cornbread."

I think Gary England has a good okie accent.

Reba Macintire is from OK, ( a town that starts with an M) now that`s what you call a southern dawl. but I don't think she picked it up here.
I haven't heard any others like hers. But what do I know? I just got here and have only been around a 175 mile radius of the west side.

Reba's a good singer and all but that accent almost sounds made up or she at least tries to talk that way. I always hated hearing her talk, it was like the wrath of the stereotypes..

I have heard a lot of people talk like Reba, especially around Durant. She did go to school there. I think the accent changes a lot as you go from south to north, and east to west. I have known some real country folk in the SE part of the state that barely had an accent though, at least to my ears.

Actually everyone has an accent. it just depends on who and from where you talked to, will it be noticed.
