I am planning on replacing a water heater and relocating a toilet in my house, and am currently just putting all the details together. I want to do this right and have it inspected, so I started to read through the Omaha municipal code. According to a section in this code "minor" repairs do not require a permit, but others require a permit from a Master Plumber.

Omaha Municipal code is listed here: Municode.com | Online Library (http://bit.ly/c9pmCU - broken link)
Plumbing is in Chapter 49

Am I allowed to perform the work myself?

All comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

I would say "No."

Minor work would include replacing a faucet or toilet - not replacing a water heater or relocating a toilet.

I've got a good friend who is a plumber here in Omaha. I'll ask him.

Your insurance company may also take issue with it, in the event you have related water damage.

Default Oy

Thanks for the replies so far!

This is what I was afraid of. I am allowed to do my own electrical, HVAC, and general remodeling--I wonder what's so special about plumbing. Or maybe there is a specific part that I have to have a plumber do? Eitherway, I have to get this stuff done, but I doubt I can afford to pay a plumber! oh boy

I am a journeyman plumber taking masters test, you can replace anything up to 10 fixture units or if remodeling up to 60 feet of developed pipping. I would suggest a journeyman plumber tell you the best way of relocating toilet for sanitary reasons, also water heater replacement could be dangerous if uneducated. I am very reasonable and am willing to help out leave name and number if you would like some help. Thanks

My guess would be a strong union lobby.

When you go to sell your house, if the work isn't done to code, you won't be able to sell until the work is done correctly. An inspection will turn up a laundry list of items that you have to redo. I've seen houses that are completely un-sellable because the owners did all their projects themselves.
