For those of you who live west, how often do you go to Benson/Dundee/midtown/downtown? For those living in the eastern part of the city do you go to the shopping/entertainment areas of west Omaha very often? Do you think that there is an east/west divide in the city? As a resident of the eastern part of the city I would say that I make it west of 84 street about twice a year.

I'm an "Omaha easterner."

My observation is that most "easterners" find this older part of the city more interesting, diverse, and cool. Personally, I love all the old homes, the hills, the trees and the historic areas. And we tend to think of west Omaha as commercialized, boring and snooty.

I also think that a lot of "westerners" view the eastern part of Omaha to be run-down, too black, too full of crime and not a positive place to live. There sure seems to be that attitude among many of the Millard folks.


I don't know. I guess you need to live where you want to live, and where you like it. I know I do!

One of the things that I love most about living in the eastern part of the city is being able to walk places without feeling like i am about to get run over. Having sidewalks that take you to a business district that is not in a sea of parking lots is great. I love living in Benson!

I would say that past 96th street is considered "west" for me. I go in between 72nd and 96th quite regularly. However, I do spend much more time east of 72nd street.

I lived in east Omaha and definitely prefer that part of town, but there are some cool areas in west Omaha too.

As a non-native, I guess I never grew up with that stigma in mind. I go where the people are... sometimes that's downtown, sometimes it's 120th and Dodge. Occasionally we'll get out to Village Point too. Hell, I get down to Lincoln at least once a month too.

I can see the divide, I've definitely noticed it's the people that grew up here that have any real preferences.

Being a lifelong person from the metro I do think of 72nd as a divider... but more and more we are staying south of Harrison... so that's becoming more of a distinctive divider than the east/west divider of 72nd...

That's a good point. Bellevue/Papillion definitely has its own flavor.

I rarely go wast of 24th St. My house on 22nd is probably the furthest west I go. If I have big shopping to do, I tend to do it over in Council Bluffs. But even then that is not that often.
