Does anyone know or have any ideas

I work in Irvine (by Santa Ana airport) but reverse commute and live in LA. Looking for side/local streets to bypass 405 or 55/5 during 4pm-7pm peak hour freeway "section" jams (for commute back to LA)?

eg avoiding Irvine to Westminister 405 section jam: take main N, bolsa W, beach N, 22, 405 ???

That would take even longer in my opinion. While you might gain twenty miles per hour when you hit full speed on the city street, you are going to loose it sitting at stop lights for 1-4 minutes going 0 mph.

Plus many intersections are so congested that it takes multiple cycles to get through, only to do it all over again 1/4mi down the road.

I used to commute to Irvine from Huntington Beach and if traffic on the 405N was slammed (like much worse then usual) I jumped off and took Baker to Adams to get home. I did'nt get home any faster, but at least I was moving.

the 22 has been moving pretty well lately.

Whatever. Stick with the freeways or try MetroLink. Side streets don't move much faster

Because of the diagonal nature of the 405 and the fact that most of the streets are jammed regardless, you're better off the freeway. just use the on-ramp/off-ramp roads for Brookhurst, Magnolia, and Beach to shave a few minutes off if they're not backed up. If you're dead set on taking surface, take Main to Warner, but you're driving through busy parts of Santa Ana so you don't really save any time. There really is no simple route. The 405 is the busiest freeway in the nation and all of the roads around it are equally busy in this area with one of Irvine's major business and industry centers, one of Santa Ana's major business centers, South Coast Metro, and John Wayne all in the same few square miles along the 405.

I had a similar commute from Huntington Harbor to Newport Beach (UCI). I would take PCH or the 405S to 73. Going home, I'd either take PCH or take the 73 to 55S, exit Del Mar Ave or Victoria, take Victoria (which becomes Hamilton), then Newland to PCH. In the summertime, I'd take Atlanta passed Main St to bypass all the tourist traffic.

To address the original poster, what area of LA do you live? When my wife (then girlfriend) went to USC for grad school, I'd take the 73, exit Harbor or Fairview, then hop back on 405N at the Harbor entrance via South Coast Drive. If I were in your situation, I'd find a way to carpool with someone. The 405N to 110N great for carpooling, especially if you're trying to get to downtown LA. In busy traffic you can exit Exposition via the carpool lanes and take Figueroa or Hope...it's also a great way to bypass the traffic to get to the 10 and 101 fwys.

no, you are screwed. I would suggest metrolink if there is an option. No traffic with that
