Hi, I am moving to Orange County for work and was hoping for some advice on neighborhoods to live. I have to do a lot of international travel for my job so I actually don't have to live close to the office, which is in Newport Beach. I am a single Asian male in my early thirties, and would like to be close to a social scene with diverse people in my age group (late 20's to late 30's) and a somewhat walkable community. I am biased towards the beach, but just don't have any idea about what the areas are actually like. I am flying in next weekend to drive around and get a real feel. Any advice is much appreciated!

For international travel, you'll probably want to be closer to LAX. Unfortunately that's pretty far from anywhere in OC. Maybe Long Beach would be a decent compromise. The morning traffic south on the 405 is pretty rough though.

Some parts of Southern California have higher percentage of Asian people. Irvine is one of them. There are others, but Irvine is sort of close to the beach and a pretty nice place to live. It is pretty suburban though, not a single dude's hangout.

Everything depends on budget. There are neat places for singles in the South Bay from El Segundo to Redondo Beach.

If the original poster is flying internationally, he probably isn't commuting daily and for international flights, possible not at the roughest commute times. But you're right, 405 is pure hell south of LAX, Torrance, Long Beach, Carson, around rush hour.

Asian Population: Irvine.
Close to the beach: Huntington Beach

It never takes me long than 45 minutes to get to LAX (but I always give myself an 1.5 hours, just in case)

You will not want to live in Irvine. It is all family, and nothing to do for 20 year olds. There are no bars etc...its ALL FAMILY. I live here and I love it. But when I was 20, no way!! You will want corona del mar if you can afford it. Or look into Apartments in Newport Beach or Costa Mesa...Lots more things to do for you. I think just because you said you are asian, people immediately jump to telling you to go to Irvine. That's not the place for you. It sounds like you want to be around others your age with restaurants, shops etc.

Maybe you've never been on the western end of Irvine? There are bars, places are open very late, there's interesting things to do like the adult bowling alley and it's right down the street from other nightlife in Newport, etc
