I have been offered a job in Long Beach and now need to figure out where to live. The job is at Miller Children's Hospital (2801 Atlantic Ave, right off the 405). I have a car and am willing to commute ~30-45 minutes to work. I'm not looking to live in a downtown/busy urban area, but nothing too suburban either if it means driving a long distance to get to things. I want a safe neighborhood that is close enough to go to the beach, restaurants, entertainment/cultural events, etc. without a long commute, but I don't need to be right in the middle of things either since I value my privacy and quiet. I don't have kids so I don't need to be concerned about the school district right now. I am not sure what my price range is as I don't know what the rent would be for a townhouse or condo rental, but I will make decent money and don't need something too cheap.

Does anyone have any recommendations on areas I should look in?

Would my commute be better if I was travelling north or south on the 405 towards Long Beach in the morning?

Thanks!

Hi, Scuba!

Why not live in Long Beach? It's a city with great diversity in lifestyle, living accommodations, entertainment options and best of all, it is close to where you work!

Belmont Shore is a great area for young single folk. Even lots of families live there. Naples Island is kind of a city unto itself. The Shoreline District is very nice now. They did away with the Pike and most of the seedy downtown area (which is tragic in many ways) and have established an attractive setting for living.

You can find condos to rent for under $2,000 per month (you can spend more if you want) or you can get into one of the newer apartment/townhome developments that have been built.

That being said, you can go south into Seal Beach, Sunset Beach or Huntington. All would be options worth exploring. And if you go inland a bit, you will find Los Alamitos, Cypress, Cerritos and some other nice suburban cities. If you go north you will find Hermosa and Manhattan to be interesting beach towns with a lot to offer.

But I would come right back to Long Beach, based upon what you said in the OP.

Good luck to you! BTW, where do you live now?

Cypress, Lakewood, Cerritos, Torrance, etc.

Do not live in:

Seal Beach
Huntington Beach
Garden Grove
Stanton
Westminster
Anaheim

You don't want to live in any city that will require you to pass the CA-22 construction where it's combined with I-405, it'll make your commute (and life) unnecessarily stressful.

Good point!

From Seal or Huntington, PCH would be the route of choice, I would think...

I would recommend Belmont Shore. but there should be no problem with HB or Seal Beach, if you commute on PCH.

DO NOT live in Stanton or Santa Ana. Be careful with Westminster, Anaheim and Garden Grove.

interesting story about the traffic circle. It was built for the 1932 Olympic Rowing Event at the Marine Stadium. Local organizers wanted create a European experience for visitors.

I have no problem with the circle now, but I will admit it was a bit challenging the first time I drove through it.
