Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, So County Cities, Tustin Hills are all fine choices that are hard to argue against. However for my personal preferences, I would choose:
1) Huntington Harbor
2) Sunset Beach
3) San Clemente

All 3 areas have plenty of character and charm.

I voted Other: SEAL BEACH, good memories, good times, I've always loved that little town, kinda still stuck in the 1970's too, in a good way.

Sunset Beach

So many memories of Sunset Beach in the 80's/90's. I love that location because I can get to Belmont Shores and Huntington Beach easily. That's where I would live.

RIP Bruce Jones - I heard this legendary shop has now closed.

I'm older with long ties to OC. Grandmother lived in Newport Beach from 1940s-thru 1980s. The islands with waterfront living is pretty desirable, especially if you enjoy boating. I personally think Laguna Beach is stunningly beautiful. I'd rank those areas as most desirable in general terms.

I live in RSM Robinson Ranch. Adjacent to Cleveland national forest. I love mountains and these have some hidden treasures. It's very easy to feel far away from civilization just by going over a couple of foothills. The elevation is a little higher than the rest of residential OC and it gives a little extra kick to the weather which I enjoy. For my price range and what I like it's desirable for me.

Default Laguna is questionable as best place to live in OC

No way Laguna should be in top two best communities to live in. The slopes are unstable. On the weekend, you have to walk because there is nowhere to park. The weekend invasion of tourists is in the thousands. You cannot even get a cold, solid yogurt on a weekend, as the mixture doesn't have a chance to cool because of the item's popularity. The coast highway is a parking lot. One day I was driving north and saw smoke ahead. I quickly u-turned. I found out later the hills were on fire. You could not go north or south. As a quick thinker, I made my move gand headed south to the 405 access. It was a great place to live 35 years ago.

Interesting, 2 cities listed in the actual poll that are west of the 55. I'll go Sunset Beach as well.

The following had no data in the table: La Palma, Los Alamitos, North Tustin, Seal Beach, Silverado, Villa Park. I also threw out Lake Elsinore, because it's in Riverside County (though some LE addresses probably come up west of the county line along Ortega Hwy), and Laguna Woods because of the age restriction.

I just noticed Mayberry-by-the-sea (Seal Beach) is listed as number 1, least. Ha. Seal Beach is a nice place.
