Hi all,
My family and I are comtemplating the wisdom of attempting to travel across the US next summer with a travel trailer. Here in Oregon, if you don't reserve a site WAAAAY ahead of time, especially during the summer, you can't get one.

Is it like that all the way across the country? Would we be crazy to plan a leisurely trip, planning on finding an available site where ever we were at the end of the day? We have driven across before, finding hotels near where we would end up and getting reservations by noon on that day. Is it possible to do the same with a travel trailer and camp sites?

We are hoping someone out there (maybe you!?) has had experience with this and would be able to help us make this a great trip.

Thanks in advance~
Mara

We use to be full time rv'ers and before that did a lot of just plain bumming around..We always called a head at lunch time..Now with the economy like it is I too would wonder if its necessary..
Why not call one of the RV parks in your area that gets a lot of one-nighters..I'm in salem and go by Silver Spurs up in Silverton at least once a week and there are always out staters park there..
They could most likely answer your question..
Weather plays such a part too in a big trip like that..
We did a big 3 month trip from northern California to Maine and luck out on weather this was in 2000.
Go for it and enjoy it..

Try rvparkreviews.com - for my taste it's a little skewed toward RV parks rather than campgrounds (like National Forest or State Parks), but you can get an idea of the campgrounds around various cities/locations and links to their web pages, which will tell you how many sites are reservable.

How much driving do you plan to do each day? When we travel, we plan on 300 miles a day. So we are in our next location by 3pm, in which case it is usually easy to find spaces in RV parks. It also gives you time to relax and check out the local area. Sometimes we will make reservations, if it looks like we will be arriving later. Always make reservations on holiday weekends.
