If you move to Oregon, try to get to Portland. Avoid Ashland, in the south. It's a tourist trap - totally phony - with lots of strict regulations. Dog policy is case in point: no dogs ever in any city park. Ever hear of a town with rules like that? And: The fines are astronomical. Property taxes are very high and benefits of life here are mediocre. It's because it is all -- all -- for luring tourists and getting them to empty their pockets. Not a nice place if you're just one of the lowly citizens, tolerated because you pay taxes. Best advice: try very hard to rent in any town you think might be a good place to live and get to know the town. It's never the same as visiting. Best of luck to you!

We DO plan on renting for a year before we buy, so we can get to know the city and do some more exploring to find out next home!
