I heard this story on the air a couple hours ago. It describes some of the issues surrounding the cuts to the police and sheriff's offices in Josephine County, including snippets from a 10-minute 911 call in which a woman's domestic abuser is trying to break into her house but the dispatcher can't help because no one is on duty at night and on weekends.

It's pretty much a given that there will be a lot of self defense shootings in parts of Oregon for the next few years.

It would certainly be understandable, under the circumstances.

I find it amazing that allot of people in Josephine County are upset at the sheriff department for not supplying personnel to cover these types of problems and then vote to reject the levy to fund the county, what do they expect? Josephine County has the second lowest property tax rate in the state next to Curry County, I wonder if there is a connection there, low tax rate poor county funding, doesn't take a mathematician to figure that one out.

True. But you are also trying to squeeze blood out of turnips. Lots of unemployment in JoCo and what jobs they do have don't pay very well. A property tax hike like that safety levy wouldn't make Portlanders so much as blink, but it can cut into the household budgets down there.

But you also must realize that many of the people complaining about these problems are the ones who voted to approve the levy.
