We were born and raised in N. Calif, but moved to the midwest 18 years ago and have been living in Ohio for 16 years. We are a few years from retirement and want to leave tornado country, but don't really want to go back to California, but we do still have some family there. Have been researching Oregon, reading threads here about Oregon in general. Myrtle Creek sounds nice and a few of the towns nearby as well. Sounds like what we're looking for, low crime, lower cost of living, affordable housing, moderate weather. It was 15 below zero here today!

What I wanted to know was the costs for everyday expenses like car registration, house insurance and the like. If someone can give examples I'd really appreciate it. Or tell me anything else I need to know about the area.
Thanks in advance!

Hm. What is car registration now? $30 a year? Something like that, not enough to pay attention to.

I think my home insurance with State Farm runs about $100 a month. Property taxes are about $120/month, but most of my property is in timber deferral and I'm outside of any city.

Myrtle Creek is definitely a low buck place to live.

Thanks for the link! That has a lot of information that I would have asked for had I thought about it.

I live in nearby Canyonville. About 1800 population with no traffic lights, I think Myrtle creek has one light. If you are a disabled veteran, your car registration is a one time $39. fee, for the rest of your life. Myrtle Creek has a summer evening Concert in the Park in July & August. It also has a dinner theater which puts on plays, musicals, mystery drama, etc. various times throughout the year. Our Property tax is less than $800. per year. And our home insurance runs about $450 yr. You have a Ray's grocery store, but most shopping is done in Roseburg (Costco, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, Safeway & Albertsons) Roseburg has 2 small malls with a Macy's and other basic stores. Major stores require a trip into Medford or Eugene. No sales tax in Oregon and you don't pump your own gas here. Myrtle Creek has a nice golf course, the South Umpqua river flows through town and offers fishing and other recreation.
