My husband and I are thinking of relocating to The Dalles, OR. We currently live in Troutdale, OR and are seeking warmer weather and low cost housing. Is there a lot of racism in The Dalles? We are a biracial couple - I'm black and he is white and we have a baby on the way. I just want to know what I may need to be prepared for if anything at all. Thanks.

About like Troutdale.

I lived in The Dalles for a while. An interracial couple is not as common there and it could create a problem or two. I mean, it is clearly a somewhat backwards town as any small town might be.

There was a C.D. thread, now closed, concerning racism in The Dalles. It is only a little more than 5 years old. The issue that started it may have been resolved but many who contributed to the discussion (including yers truly) live nowhere near T.D. so I couldn't say for sure. Reading the full thread may shed some light on how the community thinks:

Racism in The Dalles? Why is this allowed to be right across from the Courthouse?

I'm not trying to discourage you and yours from moving there but understand The Dalles is not Portland (or even Troutdale). If you are planning to buy a house, check with your realtor and make sure he (or she) is aware of your concerns. Like all mid-sized communities, there are some neighborhoods and there are other neighborhoods. A knowledgeable realtor who is willing to work with you (as opposed to merely selling a house) will steer you away from those "other" neighborhoods.

I lived in The Dalles for about a year. Very nice town, much to explore, great environment, and Hood River/White Salmon is nearby. I'm originally from Portland and I found people in The Dalles to be nice (I was 22/23 years old, young, white). We lived next door to a black family and I know that even though The Dalles in 85+% white, there are sizable numbers of Hispanics, Samoans (yes, indeed), Native Americans, and about 70 black people. You may feel a little out of place, but people will warm up to you if your nice to them. That is the main thing, people live in The Dalles because they want to live a peaceful life - hell most of your neighbors will simply be happy your not crazy people/meth cooks. Have fun.

Well, if you don't approach your neighbors defensively, and if you don't presume to tell them how to live and think, and if you demonstrate you're a good neighbor, nobody will give a rat's behind what pigmentation your skin might have. Or not have.

But you will be more unique to The Dalles then you are to Troutdale. Be ready for it.
