Hello everyone
I am from Colorado Springs and my fiancé is from the Oregon coast. Sadly, we both have wound up in Southern California and can't wait to leave the city ASAP to start a family. We are looking for acreage in a small, rural town in either Oregon, Washington, or Northern California anywhere from the west of the Cascades to the coast. I am a nurse so a hospital must be no more than an hour away. Safety and schools are of course our number one concern. Thanks for your help and any advice is appreciated

What's your budget for housing? What does your fiance do for a living?

That's not much to go on...

In Oregon I think the coast is very rainy and raising kids would be a challenge. The exception to that would be Brookings. A bit isolated and a wonderful coastal town.

Other towns that come to mind are Grants Pass, Cottage Grove, and Vernonia.

In Washington, Centralia, Chehalis and Longview are nice places.

You won't find acreage in town anywhere in Oregon unless you buy several 1/4 acre lots and meld them together.

The OP just seemed to specify 'within an hour of a hospital' so it would seem they're ok being outside any city proper.

But budget is of course question #1, and jobs aside, the other question would seem to be what they want to do with said acreage. Just be away from people? Easy enough. Build a small winery? Expensive and at least somewhat limits the options. Etc.

Good schools tend to be associated with larger cities (not 100% true, of course, but generally true).

Depending on your price point, land is cheaper is more isolated areas and much more expensive near urban areas. Because of the Urban Growth Boundaries in Oregon, you won't find much acreage within a city limit.

Rural and good schools don't typically go together in Oregon. Scio has a good K-8 and so does Sublimity. Silverton schools are decent.

Those aren't the cheapest areas to find acreage, though. So the group would need to know your budget to see what areas you can afford.

I agree that Brookings is a nice coastal town, but I don't think it's any less rainy or any better for raising kids than any other Oregon coastal town. Maybe you have information to the contrary?

They each have their pluses and minuses.

Sorry if my question was a bit too vague. My fiancé works from home so that will not be an issue. Our ultimate dream would be to buy as much acreage as possible for no more than $200,000 and then build our dream home. We would use the property for farming and living more of an off-grid lifestyle so seclusion is welcomed. Safety is number one on our list and I've heard quite a bit about drug issues in small towns leaving us concerned. If the schools aren't all too great, then home schooling will have to be an option. So raising them in a safe area where drugs won't be a concern is our biggest priority even if the schools aren't too great.

That price point rules out good chunks of the valley.
