Hello all! I grew up in New England and the fall is my favorite time of the year because of the beautiful foliage. I now live in the Southwest and am not always able to get back to New England to see the colors. Are there places in Oregon where the autmn colors can be enjoyed? I would love to visit and experience them.

It's getting close to time. I drove over to Salem on Friday (Sept 23) and the color was just starting.

You are in California and want to take a foliage vacation to Oregon? Or are you in the southwestern corner of Oregon and want to visit places in Oregon with fall foliage??

Fall foliage in Oregon isn't quite the same as New England as we have deciduous trees with our firs. It is still nice but it is different.

I am actually in Arizona. I usually fly east to see the leaves but thought I would check out western areas this fall.

The highway between Corvallis and the coast has some nice fall foliage. Then as a bonus, you get to see our beautiful coast line. The best coast line is between Yachats and Florence. There are two old covered bridges very close to that highway.

You'd probably fly into Portland and I don't know what sort of foliage there is on the highway to the coast from Portland, but you can go up the Columbia Gorge and see some foliage. Multnomah Falls is an excellent photo opportunity.

The drive from Corvallis to the coast is even better in the spring when all the Rhodies are in bloom.

A lot of the foliage is from the maples and they are mostly located in the coast range. Going over the Cascades, you get foliage from the aspens. Fall foliage is mostly gold, although there is something low growing that gets fiery red (chinkapin, maybe?)

In October, if you are in Northeast Oregon, be sure to see the deciduous conifer Tamaracks that have turned bright gold in the mountains of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. I will be making my annual tour in a couple of weeks. These are from past years:

Since we mostly have evergreen trees, our foliage is not as colorful as the east coast. You still get spots here and there though.

Today shows very nice colors in Columbia Gorge, and even some lower elevations / cities and parks. Not quite like NE USA, as we don't have the 'hardwoods' / varieties of Deciduous trees, and have pretty anemic soils to restrict nutrients in trees (water soaked, leached) (as mentioned many Conifer in 'Evergreen PNW' ). Blueberries and Sumac are GREAT at the moment in 1000' elevations. https://www.google.com/search?q=suma...w=1194&bih=710

Mid-valley covered bridges is often a nice 'color jaunt'

Fall in Coast range / along coast is nice. RED coastal sunsets are spectacular in the fall. Don't miss the colors / soils here (for sunset) <1 hr from Portland

Rain / wind / snow can wipe out colors FAST (as per East coast too)

For your color pleasure... with added benefits... consider Albuquerque Hot air Balloon Fiesta and related terrain (weekend to Angel Fire / Cumbres Railway / Northern NM / Southern CO.)

Gunnison to Steamboat, CO nice Aspen colors (last week of Sept)
SLC / Bearlake / Tetons / Yellowstone / Star Valley / is nice too.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions everyone! I have heard great things about the coast so I'm thinking of taking a weekend to explore that area. I had friends who visited the Columbia Gorge who say it's a "must see." When would be a good time to visit to see the foliage? Is it still around in October?

The last time I went to Columbia Gorge, there was insane amount of traffic and congestion. Which side of the river would you guys say has less traffic, Oregon or Washington?
