We are planning a visit to Oregon to see if that's a place we would like to retire. We will have four days and want to concentrate on the Willamette Valley. Any suggestions of a good central location (hotel) to stay while we tour the Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene?

If what you want is convenience, then Salem might be a good central location for you. There are a number of brand-name motels just off the Interstate. For something more interesting and still fairly central, I'd suggest McMinnville. There are a number of choices of lodging including the more traditional like the Red Lion, or something fun like McMenamin's Hotel Oregon, or maybe a quiet B&B such as Oregon Wine Cottage.

Near the intersection of I-5 and US 20 (Albany area). It's in the middle of the Willamette Valley. Hwy 20 goes to both Newport and Sisters/Bend area. Close to Corvallis.

The Grand Phoenix is downtown, otherwise the Residence Inn on Hawthorne is popular with folks out visiting for relocation purposes.

MCMINNVILLE ! We are a beautiful town with gorgeous surroundings, we home the spruce goose, many wineries, and lots more. The historic downtown ( 3rd street) is quite pleasant! Wonderful little boutiques, old buildings, coffee shops, there is a ceramic shop where you can paint your item and they will fire it for you. It is quite fun! Our newest hotel in town is the Comfort Inn which is really nicely done, with pleasant staff and there is also the Hotel Oregon ( McMenamins) which is nice too.. it is directly located on 3rd st. Hope you come! You'll enjoy! Oh.. plus we are a skip and a stone away from the beach and Spirit Mountain Casino is on the way to the coast, if you enjoy casinos.

Why not try the new Oregon Gardens Resort in Silverton..It is 13 miles from downtown Salem and has an excellent rate which includes breakfast dinner and full access to the gardens..It is just opened...
Salem is truly the most central for the valley.
Enjoy

lizwidi,

Enjoyed your post, and wish I could be "cooler...", not possible in 85 degree sunshine, but even then the air CAN be crisp.

Is McMinnville really close to the coast? I want to retire to the coast but worry about affording it. Of course, today, there is much to worry about!

Coming from an area, where one might not expect it, but there are many casinos, I would like to stay away from that, and golf courses too. Until reading your post, I never really considered that far inland and have had my dreams from Cannon Beach and south- stopping point where it is too sunny.

Like Tiffela and Oregonbeachlover's posts, yours is uplifting. I'm reminded of a song "Stand in the Place Where you Live" and don't even know where that comes from.
