Coos Bay Area
I have an interview coming up in Coos Bay. What does the Coos Bay area offer for a 23 yr old new grad bachelor who likes adventure sports (ie mountain bikng, road biking, hiking, rock climbing)? Also, is there an ice rink anywhere near Coos Bay?!?! I'm Minnesotan, I need to play hockey.
Thanks!

There's no ice rink around and I don't know where to find one. There's lots of places to go hiking and lots of forest around. If you like adventure sports you may want to take up some new ones.
People go out to ride the sand dunes for fun. Some like surfing (you wear a wet suit here). There's hills to climb and beaches to walk. Some folks like fishing and crabbing.
When you come for your interview I'd suggest taking a look around.

lol, no doubt!! Everything but the WalMart closes down by about 5.00pm. Honestly, theres really not much nightlife here at all. You interested in starting something interesting? Youd make a lot of money probably!
Although, shortly after we moved here, hubby and I went out for drinks/dancing/music....we're in our early 30s and were by several years, the youngest ones there. We did get some good laughs in and felt pretty dang good about ourselves after a time though. lol
on the upside, when you have kids, youre more likely to stay at home and have family game night and you save a heck of a lot of money.
As for hockey, ohhhh boy. you may start preparing yourself for withdrawls now. You might pop over to the college though while youre here and talk w/some others roundbout your age, see what they think of CB and what they do for fun.
Good Luck!!

I disagree with seashelly regarding the nightlife. I was transfered to Coos Bay, Oregon and lived there for four years. I was single and had a great time.Very lucky I didn't get shot. I could be wrong but I don't believe you will initially find the bars as friendly as in Minnesota. When I walked into any bar or tavern in Minnesota I was made to feel like someones long lost brother. Great People. You're young and if the interview works to your satisfaction, I'd make the move. It would be totally different than where you live now and to me that would be the attraction. Good luck on your interview.

'Adventure Sports'? Definately check out the dunes at Horsfall for ATVing and sand surfing and even further north about 15 miles at Winchester Bay. Something else you might be interested in is Frisbee Disc Golf. There's a course in the park just across the street from the North Bend Tourist Information Center, another good place to stop in for ideas. Good luck on your job interview.

Coos Bay
Hockey...no way man. The closest Ice rink is in Eugene, which is about 2 hours away from Coos Bay. Personally I don't have any problems with Coos Bay, but when I'm heading to the coast, it's not the first on my list mainly because when I go, its for a weekend getaway, and there are many more interesting places on the coast in my opinion. Coos Bay is however the largest coastal city in Oregon. Night life is what you'd typically expect in a town of about 30,000 (including North Bend). Its often drizzly and overcast in Coos Bay when it's nice everywhere else. There is a casino in town that I don't belive ever closes, so don't let the "everything closes at 5PM" comment discourage you. As far as outdoor activities, yes, all over the place. Bandon is about 17 miles south of Coos Bay, we like to do sea kajaking in Bandon, but as previously mentioned, there are also the dunes, wich means ATV's, dune buggies, etc. If you can, I'd recommend a trip to Coos Bay so you can get a first hand idea. Eugene is the closest commercial airport...again 2 hours away, but you'll have fun driving down the coast.

I don't know how big 'commercial' is suppose to mean but we have a busy airport here in North Bend - SouthWest Oregon Regional Airport - and it's pretty good size and growing.
