Generally, highway 30 doesn't do much for me. between Portland and Astoria. Highway 26 is my favorite. Highway 6 to Tillamook is fairly attractive, and you could head north past Manzanita. I you take the longer drive from Seattle, maybe its worth taking 26 just to get to your lodging, then explore.

But using Google Maps, I see that swinging by Portland can add almost an hour to your trip. Looks like the Longview and Astoria route of about three and a half hours may be your best option.

Do you like hiking? Or more casual stuff like strolling the beach, shopping and dining?

Here's a photo of our oldest son on top of Neahkahnie Mountain, overlooking Nehalem Bay and Manzanita, a short ways south of Cannon Beach.

The easiest way would be to take Highway 26 SE to Portland. I think it's just a few miles south of Cannon Beach on Highway 101. That should take 1 hr 30 min. If you want something a little different, you can take 101 south to Tillamook, then pick up Highway 6 NE to Portland. You'll go through part of Tillamook National Forest. That trip would take about 2 hr 30 min. I once took Hwy 26 out to the coast on a day with not much rain and came back on Hwy 6 where there was about a foot of snow on the road. I was quite surprised. I didn't realize it was a higher elevation. Very nice though, with all the trees. Highway 26 is also a nice drive, once you get out of Portland.

Oh yeah ...

There is this logging museum restaurant 22 miles east of Seaside, along Hy. 26 in Elsie, on the way back to Portland if you head that way. Fairly interesting place to eat and look around.
