Relocating to Orlando area in a few weeks. I need to pick up a beater for about a month or two. I don't know if I'll go private sale or a dealer...depends on the deal.

How do I register and get plates for the car if I buy from a dealer? (I've noticed most of the cars on the lots don't have plates.)

How do I register and transfer/get plates if I buy from a private party?

I know I need insurance. But I'm not sure how to have it ahead of time until I know which car I'm going to pick up. Do local insurance companies issue cards or something?

Is there a state mandated inspection for emissions or safety that I have to do prior to registering it?

FL doesn't make it easy (it seems) to just go buy a car and drive it away.

Contact the Orlando DMV. They can answer those questions for you.

There is a very detailed web site if you google Florida DMV or similar words. Here's one link

Good luck!

Thank goodness. There are already enough drivers with expired licenses and without insurance driving on the roads.

Good luck!

Actually I went to that site before I posted. I'm still "confused".

I figure that the dealer can get plates for me but I'm still unsure about a private party sale.

Is there a state mandated inspection of vehicles in FL?

No. As far as I know there is no mandatory inspection of vehicles here.

As I said contact the DMV. It's better to get a person to answer your questions than a website.

No inspections down here. Heck, many drive here with no car insurance.

And you just walk into DMV with a valid out of state license and they hand you a FL one. No written exam or driving test.

And people wonder why the roads are a free for all here.

When we bought our new vehicle, the dealership supplied us with a temporary plate and notified us when the new one had arrived and we picked it up. We had to provide proof of insurance before we could drive the car off the lot.

When we moved here from Canada we imported one vehicle and simply had to go the the county tax collector office, I believe there are a offices all over. We paid and they gave us new plates. I imagine it would be the same process for purchasing a car privately. Likely the Orange, Seminole, Lake etc County websites will have links or directions where to go!

Once you get here, check out the DMV website and you'll be able to find a DMV near you where you can get a FL license, make an appointment, you'll still wait but not for as long!

If you buy from a dealer all you need to do is buy insurance and they will handle all the paperwork for you and provide you with a temporary tag until they register the car. If you buy from a private party, you will need the title, a bill of sale and insurance and go to the tag agency. New plate and registration will cost about $400

Very few states require someone with a valid out of state license to take a drivers exam to get re-licensed in the new state.

At least Florida now requires positive proof of identity and residency to get a license. And you need a license to register a car.

Most states require a written exam. When I moved from Oregon back to CA I was required to take a written exam, even though I held a CA license for over 20 yrs.

FL needs to crack down on uninsured drivers and those who drive on suspended licenses. It is insane here that all you get is a ticket when they're pulled over and don't have insurance.

In most states the car is impounded on the spot and the driver only gets it back AFTER they show the DMV proof of insurance.

There is no incentive here to carry insurance, because they don't impound vehicles.

Eventually their license gets suspended and they drive on a suspended DL.
