I heard that there are plans to put Times Square type signs in downtown Orlando. Is there any truth to that? I don't know if I think that's cool or horrible.

Nah.. if anything I think it would be a mess. Times Square is not just a Square anymore, it's at least 12-14 blocks plus surrounding. If they did, it would look more like Toronto's Dundas Square anyway. Personally I think DT Orlando looks fine the way it is, it's the surrounding areas west and south that look like they need improvement, more commercial etc.

I could see them replacing the big screen on the Wachovia building with something more impressive. It looks dated. I would not mind a bigger screen there with a higher resolution.

"Downtown South" as they are branding it these days has made big strides in the last few years. Delaney Park has always been a very nice neighborhood, but Orange Ave south of downtown was an eyesore. It used to be nothing but warehouses, a few really old strip malls and loads of junky auto shops and random crap. Now that SoDo came along the area has been slapped with a coat of fresh paint. ORMC has new buildings, there are new small strips that look much nicer, and new small counter-service chain restaurants are popping up. This area looks like it is on the right path.

I don't have a link for where I saw that. They were talking about it on SBK Live last night on 104.1 - don't know where they got it.

Church St was supposed to get a canopy like Fremont St in Vegas. Now that one I don't want to see. We already have CityWalk if you want some touristy, in-your-face party scene. Tourists are not going to go to Church St, so that would just make it tacky for the rest of us. Church St can thrive as a locals spot with the right venues. The ones that have opened there are good.

Unless you're referring to the four-foot-tall neon sign with red lights that Alan Grayson had originally wanted to have his name on in Downtown Orlando? Of course, that is old news now.

Please tell me that idea fell through? I was DT tonight and am always pleased with the balance of craziness on Orange & Church, and the chillness throughout the rest of downtown.

If I remember right the Church St. Idea was scrubbed for cost. The developer was to incur the total cost with no help from the city. Technically speaking Orlando already has a time square. It's basically the closed off portion of Wall St. That area is already known as Time Square Plaza...I think.
