People are showing up here in Orlando, but learning when they get here that it's hard to find a place to live with no money and no job. Now they want Orange County to pay for these tent cities. How do you feel about it?

Why should Orange County pay? This is FEMA's responsibility.

Well, they become Florida residents when they arrive here...isn't it our duty to support them?

So why was FEMA involved in Texas, then? Or even here, for that matter. And no, they don't become Florida residents just because they arrive here, not until they declare residency. To me, the issue is should Orange County pay for it. No, that's FEMA's job, just like it is FEMA's job to care for hurricane victims anywhere in the US. Why put the burden on Orange County?

I agree. After Katrina, people lived in FEMA trailers. Tents in Florida is not the best idea to house people. Also Katrina victims were dispersed to other parts of the country. We had Katrina victims in the Tampa Bay area. Houston got a lot of people displaced by Katrina (and had to deal with some of the problems as a result).

If you read the article either Orange County or the state is going to pay for this. FEMA not involved.

Yes, I read the article. You asked how I felt about it and I told you. And no, I don't see where it says either Orange County or the state is going to pay for it. It only says they've been ASKED to pay for it, and so far, Orange County has said they'll chip in the land. The state hasn't responded is what I read.

The Feds need to step in and provide the housing. It's not as if there isn't a ton of foreclosed housing around the country that the banks are hanging on to, at taxpayer expense.

Yes, but let's keep telling anyone and everyone to move here because it's affordable and there are plenty of jobs. This is the tip of the iceberg as the population growth continues with the majority of new "opportunity" involving part-time/no benefits service sector jobs, and the rental market continuing to adjust to demand by raising rents double digit percentages annually.

Don't the banks want to sell those, not give them away?

Maybe the government could buy all of them and just give them away but then someone will still have to pay the light and water bills once the people are living in them.
