My husband and I decided we had enough of the horrible Wisconsin winters and have decided to relocate to Florida. I have a job waiting for me when we get there, yeah!! My husband on the other hand.... He is in the Food and Beverage Industry and has lots of experience. He has a phenomenol(sp?) resume, with excellent references as well as letters of recommendation. He has sent out at least 20 resumes and has had only one call back! What is the deal? Any restaurant would be crazy not to hire him, as he is awesome at his job! Anyone have any tips on what more he can do?

It certaintly doesn't stem from lack of resteraunts, we have plenty of those. But, when the economy starts to slup, the resteraunt industry is the first to feel it. Maybe he should lower his expectations?

not for nothing but saying your husband can't find restaurant work in Orlando is like saying you can't find a slot machine in Atlantic City.

Try applying at a resort or hotel, their always hiring and are alot more laid back.

Disney are recruiting in Food and Beverage at the moment. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and take anything. Its easier to find the sort of job you want when you are here looking that looking from afar.

I was told to do this also. I cannot believe that you are penalized for trying to do your best and succeeding. This must be an Orlando thing, because I did not have to do this in NYC or NJ to get a job.

I have survived a few of those nasty, brutal Wisconsin winters and can certainly understand your desire to move to Florida! With this tight job market, I think that your husband will probably have to wait until after he moves to set up an interview and secure a job. I am sure there are plenty of qualified candidates that are competing with him for these jobs, but they have the advantage of alreay being in the city. He can make some contacts while in WI, though. I wasn't able to get a job in Los Angeles until I actually moved here because of the competition - only a few employers would even consider my resume before I actually moved here.
One thing that I did that helped - I got a prepaid cell phone with a Los Angeles number and put that on my resume. When I got calls, I said I as out of town and would then set up an interview for when I would be there. I rolled into town with 3 interviews lined up. |
