I saw a tweener standing on a street corner with her Razor Scooter hoisted up over her shoulder waiting to cross the road in a huge storm a few weeks ago. Can't believe she didn't become a crispy critter.

In my defense, there was maybe a 5-10 minute period between the time it was still sunny and the time the wind started picking up and all hell breaking loose.

That's typical. If you had left as soon as you saw the storm clouds rolling in you would have had time to hustle back to your hotel.

Are you relocating here? If not, I don't understand your concerns.

That was the problem, as soon as I did notice the storm clouds we left. Where we were at at the Beach Club (with the buildings and the trees, etc.) I didn't see the clouds until they were getting right up on us.

You're in much more danger of death from a car accident here than you are from lightning.

Then you should have just stayed put in the safety of the Beach Club. You could have gone into the lobby and looked through the shops for a bit until it blew over. Trying to "outrun" a nearby thunderstorm here is like trying to outrun a twister. Not advisable.

The problem being, and your assumption is, that everyone knows this. And they know how fast a storm moves in Florida...as if it is the same everywhere else. It is not.

My daughter played 4 innings of softball before a 'visible' storm got to our field rendering the rest of the game unplayable. (they are 11, and the innings were loooooong! lol) Storms in a lot of the rest of the country are much slower moving, and alot less violent.

I fully understand the feeling of being overwhelmed of the original poster, as I had that same feeling when we were there at our new house over Memorial day....bright and sunny one minute - we were all in the pool...and then...BLAM! Thunder...lightning...pouring rain! We never did see it coming! LOL!

A lot of them aren't fast moving here, though. Last night it got dark and windy here for at least an hour before it finally started raining.
