Orlando's downtown is no different than many other "downtowns" these days. They're effectively CBD's, not downtowns. CBD=Central Biz District) It's only busy on nights if you're into clubbing and only busy on weekends if there's an event. Otherwise, it's pretty well dead. I lived on Lakeview just across I-4 from the Doubletree/Hilton property when I was there, and I rarely went downtown other than to go to Amway, especially after Gino's pizza left. Man, I loved that pizza.

Lake Eola is very busy every Saturday and Sunday from morning until late at night. It has truly become the central meeting place of Orlando even when there is no event, but it is extra crowded during the Sunday farmers market. If we are only talking about the CBD itself, then yeah that is only crowded on weekend nights for bar hopping.

Fixed it for you.
And not just the park itself, but the streets surrounding it as well.
I take my kids there on weekends and the sheer volume of people is comparable to that of parks in true major cities.

When compared to the world, Orlando is not a major city.

But I would say that it is one of the more important cities in the United States.

No, I haven't been everywhere, but I wouldn't lump some of the cities you guys have mentioned as major cities like Houston, Nashville, etc. as major world cities either.

Orlando's -downtown- is actually a -downtown- and not a central business district.
Downtown Orlando has a large bar/club scene pretty much nightly (Orange/Church) and major events periodically.

There are far more people on any given night drinking in Downtown Orlando, than WORKING in the daytime in Downtown Orlando.

The business hubs and industry are spread out all over the county. People who work in 32801 are the minority amongst the county.

Look at when you can park in Orlando. During the daytime, Rosalind, Washington and Central have PLENTY of metered parking. After 9PM... it becomes a zoo. To me it's rather unusual... but it's just how the city operates.

You're absolutely right about Lake Eola area. However, most people wouldn't consider that area fully "downtown". It really is the jewel of the city.

Yes, it's a major city based on the amount of traffic and tourism from conventions and Disney alone.

Until you have been to at least a handful of the major cities in the world, you have no basis to compare, so with all due respect, your opinion is invalid.

I would also say that Orlando is not "one of the more important cities in the United States." Go visit the truly large and world-class cities in this country, then come back and give an informed opinion.

Nope. It doesn't even come close to traffic in New York and LA. Or Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Boston, or Washington.
