I was just pondering the question of Fiat's lack of success as I passed a Fiat lot today. I think people want cute cars, but not a lot of people want to take the plunge and get something that small. PT Cruisers and HHRs were bigger and more in line with real people. They need to bring another bigger Fiat (or Alfa) and fast. A Fiat (or Alfa) competing against the Golf, Civic, et al might have a chance. I've seen some Alfas driving around here in SE MI so they might have a plan of some sort for this.
P.S. Our Fiats are made in Mexico in the old PT Cruiser factory.
Everyone is missing the main reason why they are not selling. And this is the main reason that I didn't buy one. There is no 3rd row seating! In this day and age that is simply unacceptable.

Please for the love of the flying spaghetti monster tell me your joking.
I live in NYC where parking is a nightmare and was looking for a second car for my fiance. She floated the idea of a Smart for 2 or a Fiat. To make a long story short we decided to go with a 2014 Honda Civic Ex. Why? It was much more practical than the other 2 for around the same price.
The title of the thread I guess refers to the US, but in Europe the 500 continues to sell well.
There is a wider range of engines over here, both petrol and diesel. Petrol includes the great TwinAir twin cylinder version.
For most people for most of the time a car transports just one or two people through road and traffic conditions where performance is hardly an issue.
The Fiat sells well due to its looks (it's widely regarded as cute over here) and its character, and that it fulfills those basic transport needs.
