The "hate me" reference was because in its day this song was so overplayed on the radio, and was recorded by so many different artists, that it became a victim of its own popularity. "Feelings" was considered the epitome of the cliched, easy listening lounge song. If you were around then and considered yourself a hipster, when you heard the first notes of the song you were supposed to groan.
Oh, no! Not "Feelings" again! But you're right, it was popular for a reason. It is a great song.
