I know you could pinch a tube on a split rim... did that times remounting tractor tires and refilling them with calcium chloride solution what a mess..
I'm so old I remember... The old hand pumps out side the farm house kitchen.. had the little " knob" on top of the spout that held the kettle from sliding off as you pumped.. plus a secret hole just back from that knob.. I must have been 6 -7 yrs.when the old farmer showed me the " secret" place your hand over the spout.. don't let the water come out in a cranky voice.. and little stream of water shot straight up.. bewilder from my look.. take a drink he graveled ..
We didn't have electricity and pumped our water by hand.
We thought our neighbor ( who had electricity) had it made because he had a pump jack.
Anybody remember them ?
We had a shallow well with a draw bucket on a pulley until I was in junior high. After someone forgot to replace the lid on the well and a cat fell in it we installed a new well with an electric pump. However, we still had no hot water in the house other than a wash tub heated over a propane heater.
I have one of the old hand water pumps in my barn. I wish I still had the cast iron pulley that was over our shallow well. As I recall it was quite elaborate.
Yes, I remember hand pumps.
PS: Out here on the South Plains of Texas you would need a LONG rope to reach the water with a bucket. And if you did have an open well, any cat who fell in it would be better served by having a parachute rather than a life vest.

Choward's Violet mints, though there's no mint in them. They're still being made. My son found and bought some for me recently. Blast from the past. I hadn't seen them in decades.
Everyone use to sew back then, we use to make mid-drift tops, halter tops, maxi dresses. There weren't a lot of stores and the cool clothes for teenagers at the mall was minimal selection, so if you wanted cool & groovy fashions you made them
I'm so old I remember... It's 2 in the morning and your putting tire chains on the car to get to work...
