I have been pondering this for a while now, especially as I watch my kids grow up. I wonder what they will be when they are all grown up and then I wonder what will I be when they are all grown up? I have actually had a pretty full life so far and although I am happy to retire on a beach somewhere as soon as possible, I expect I will be bored too quickly and might need a plan "B". When I was kid I had several ideas of what I thought I would be...

1. mom
2. carpenter
3. truck driver
4. interior decorator
5. millionaire
6. the first female president of the USA

2-1/2 out of 6 isn't bad, but now I think I may have been better suited for something else....

1. camp counselor
2. forest ranger
3. master gardner
4. nurse

Maybe I will get a second chance to try out one of these ideas in my retirement, definately as a volunteer and not as a certified or highly educated individual of course.

Now that you're all grown up, given the chance to start all over, what do you think you should've been when you grew up?

When I was a kid I wanted to be an airline pilot. I've always loved airplanes, since I was 5 or 6 years old. I also wanted to join the Air Force, but.. I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes right after I turned 14, so that changed my career plans because the FAA is really strict about giving licenses and certifications to people with medical conditions like diabetes, even though I'm as healthy as a normal person.

I did take flying lessons in 1989 and I have a VFR certification for the Cessna 172, but for professional flying, you have to have an IFR (Instrumental Flying Rules) certification, and like I mentioned, they won't issue those to people with medical conditions.

I'm a software engineer right now and I enjoy it, but I've flown on simulators, including ones for the Airbus A319, A320, A321, the Boeing 737, and Boeing 757. I also have a flight simulator on one of my home computers and I enjoy the challenge of landing Boeing 747's , and if I were needed to fly and land a jetliner, I'll be able to do it.

I know that we don't get to choose our parents and the previous generations, but if I get a second chance and somehow I don't inherit the diabetes gene from my grandfather on my father's side of the family, I'd definitely be flying jetliners.

to all the parents out there, watch your kids. pay attention to what they are good at and what they like. i wish someone had done that with me and helped guide me. instead they ( my parents) left it up to HS guidance councelors and they were just interested in getting me into college with no real direction on what i would do....

I should have gone into advertising! I can't tell you how many times I see a commercial and say "Oh they should have done *this* with that ad...." and everyone around me says "wow, that would make a great ad!" Saying that though, I don't think I would have enjoyed the competitive work environment. I have been a teacher and worked in social services....now I work from home in a job I LOVE unlike anything I've ever done before!
